Nathan's embroidered chef jacket and the Weber Grilling Cookbook
What Bella and Molly did while we were cooking the birthday dinner
The finished product: chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, gravy and sweet peas

NATHAN'S 31ST BIRTHDAY

On July 13th, Nathan turned 31 years old....yes, that means he is a year younger than me but we won't get into that right now. I had ordered his birthday gift a month in advance just to allow enough time and I am definitely glad I did because it got here a few days before the big day. He loves to cook and he especially loves to grill and/or smoke BBQ. So I figured getting a chef's jacket embroidered with his name would be a great gift...and it would mean that he could get as dirty as he wants without worrying about ruining any good shirts. He has a couple of grilling cookbooks but you can never have too many. Since he loves anything Weber, I thought getting him the Weber cookbook would be a great addition to the collection. I have to say I was pretty proud of my creativity for the birthday gift and I think he was impressed as well. :)

The other part of my gift was going out to a nice dinner at a local steakplace called Chamberlain's. We met our friends the Henderson's (Joe was Nathan's best man) there and enjoyed a really nice meal. The other great thing about this place is that if you sign up for their emails, you get a coupon for half off any entree for your birthday...which meant that we saved about $30. I am all about getting a good deal! If you have never been there, I would highly recommend it because the food is delicious. Plus, it's one of the few places that has Kobe beef steaks....which is why we tried it the first time back in the spring.

On Nathan's actual birthday, we cooked dinner together. He wanted chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and sweet peas....and oatmeal chocolate chip cookies for dessert. He is a little better at making the gravy and frying the steaks than I am so we have developed a good routine. I get everything else ready and I do the breading of the steaks....then he fries them in the cast iron skillet and makes the gravy afterwards. It was sooooo good. I think Nathan had a great birthday all around....and it's the perfect excuse to eat whatever we want. :)
